Spring Storm

It has taken me a couple/few days to download and upload, but on Wednesday April 27, we had our first thunderstorm of the season. The local media reported it as earlier than usual for this kind of storm. It occurred in the mid afternoon, and brought us about 0.12 inches of rain plus a little bit of hail, in only about 20 minutes total. The first short video below is of the hail - you can see it as white streaks. This is looking out our door to the east. The second video is of the rain, looking south, out our garage door. Please ignore the sacks of garbage next to the fence. The third video is looking north out of the kitchen window. Since the window is closed, you can't hear the rain.

When thunderstorms happen in the summer, after the vegetation has dried out, they concern me - we have hills with trees, and I worry about lightning strikes setting brush fires. On this day, because the vegetation is still somewhat moist and green, and there didn't seem to be much lightning, I was able to relax and enjoy the storm.

This is quite a contrast to our attitudes when I was a girl growing up in Ohio. We loved thunderstorms, and would even run outside and wash our hair in the rain. Ohio was moist enough year round, that we didn't even think about lightning setting fires. Carefree!
