Sp-ring! Wildflower walk number 1

Considering how dry a winter and early spring we have had, we are having a monster wildflower year. I haven't seen so many flowers here for years. In late February, we walked up one of our canyons to find California poppies on the sunny hillsides and canyon floors.

Where it was shady, Miners' lettuce was abundant. Miners' lettuce (Claytonia), besides being pretty, makes a delicious addition to a salad and I've read that early Californians used it as a food. In the photo, it is the plant with the flat, round leaf with the tiny cluster of white flowers.

My wheelbarrow planting of daffodils and grape hyacinths put on a nice show, harmonizing with the wildflowers.

We saw some other wildflowers blooming on our February wildflower walk, and across the road from us, our neighbors had a canyon floor covered with blooming mustard -

not a native plant, but still pretty.

I think one of the things that makes this spring seem so amazing is that it was so GREEN. It was certainly green in February, but is drying out fast - nevertheless, we are enjoying it while the green lasts!
